Der phänomenale Erfolg von Pietro Mascagnis Debüt »Cavalleria Rusticana« überstrahlt bis heute bei weitem seine 15 anderen Opern, von denen man heute kaum noch eine kennt, am ehesten noch seinen Zweitling »L’amico Fritz«. Dieser wird von Kennern als eine seiner besten Opern angesehen und war bei Erscheinen 1891 überaus erfolgreich. Erzählt wird die Geschichte vom eingefleischten Junggesellen Fritz Kobus, einem Grundbesitzer, und Suzel, der Tochter eines seiner Pächter. Fritz wehrt sich lange gegen seine Gefühle, auch beflügelt von einer Wette. Am Ende siegt, nicht zuletzt durch eine List seines Freundes Rabbi David, natürlich die Liebe.
Die Oper enthält das »Duetto delle ciliegie« (Kirschenduett), eines der bekanntesten Werke Mascagnis, das oft auf Operngalas zu hören ist.
Die erstaunlich wirkungsvolle moderne Inszenierung am Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florenz wurde von der Kritik gefeiert.
