Die ersten englischen Lehrbücher fürs Lautenspiel erschienen in den 1560er Jahren, in der Jugendzeit von John Johnson und Anthony Holborne. Johnson und Holborne wirkten gleichzeitig am königlichen Hof und verhalfen der Laute mit ihren unterschiedlichen Ansätzen zu einer ersten Blütezeit in England. Der junge bulgarische Lautenist Yavor Genov gehört zu den vielversprechendsten Talenten der Szene.
