Sowohl Pizzetti als auch Strawinsky fühlten sich zum Thema Ödipus Rex hingezogen, allerdings in sehr unterschiedlichen Zusammenhängen. Der 24-jährige Pizzetti erhielt den Auftrag, drei Orchesterpräludien für eine Theaterproduktion zu schreiben. Er schrieb mit einem strengen Sinn für orchestrale Farben, ohne Impressionismus, der das vage Archaische bevorzugt, mit modalen Anklängen. Strawinskys Opernoratorium wurde in seinem neoklassischen Stil geschrieben, mit einer zentralen Rolle für den Erzähler. Die Verwendung der lateinischen Sprache und Strawinskys Anweisung an die Hauptfiguren, Masken zu tragen, verleihen dem Werk, das in einer Katharsis gipfelt, in einem strengen, stilisierten und formalen Rahmen zeitlose, entpersonalisierte Elemente.
