Rundum überzeugend
"Jonas Kaufmann singt umwerfend gut" urteilte der Guardian nach der Premiere von Puccinis Manon Lescaut, in der langerwarteten Neuproduktion an der Londoner Covent Garden Opera. Kaufmann überzeugte Publikum und Kritik in der Rolle des Des Grieux vollständig und wurde begeistert gefeiert, ebenso wie Kristine Opolais, welche die Manon hinreißend und wandlungsfähig sang. "Zwei der besten Sänger der heutigen Zeit, auf dem Höhepunkt Ihres Könnens" lobte die Kritik. Christopher Maltmann gab den Lescaut in der richtigen Mischung aus Charm und auch Maurizo Muraro wurde für den Geronte gelobt. Entscheidend für das musikalische Gelingen war sicherlich auch Dirigent Antonio Pappano, der das Orchester zu Höchstform antrieb und wieder einmal unter Beweis stellte, dass er einer der besten Puccini - Dirigenten dieser Tage ist. Regie hatte Jonathan Kent, der die Handlung in die heutige Zeit verlegte.
