Lorin Maazel (1930–2014) war der vielleicht interessanteste Musiker seiner Zeit. Allein die Vielzahl der Engagements als Chefdirigent macht ihn zu einer Ausnahmeerscheinung. Nach Studien in Klavier, Violine, Harmonielehre, Kontrapunktik, Komposition und ersten Auftritten als jugendlicher Dirigent in den USA, wohin seine Familie 1932 aus Frankreich ausgewandert war, saß er als Geiger im Pitsburgh Sympony Orchestra und studierte nebenbei Philosophie, Wirtschaft, Literatur, Französisch und Russisch.
Unvergessen bleibt – neben zahlreichen Engangements in Italien, Salzburg, New York, ... – sein Auftritt in London, wo er 1988 bei einer Wohltätigkeitsveranstaltung an einem Tag mit drei verschiedenen Orchestern alle neun Beethoven-Sinfonien aufführte.
