Die Handlung ist urkomische Selbstironie: Eine Operntruppe zerstreitet sich heillos im Vorfeld einer geplanten Aufführung: Es fehlt ein Star und es fehlt an Geld. Selbstüberschätzung und Eifersüchteleien münden dann doch im Happy End: Mamma Agata, gespielt von einem Bariton, singt zwar mäßig, versetzt aber den Familienschmuck, um die Kaution der Stadt bezahlen zu können und die Premiere zu retten: Viva la Mamma!
