Über 200 Jahre lang galt das Frühwerk „La fuga in maschera“ des italienischen Dirigenten und Komponisten Gaspare Spontini (1774–1851) als verschollen. Die Commedia per musica in zwei Akten wurde 1800 während des Karnevals am Teatro Nuovo in Neapel uraufgeführt und verschwand danach von den Bühnen der Welt bis im Jahr 2007 eine phänomenale Wiederentdeckung und die Gemeinde Maiolati Spontini, die Geburtstadt Gaspare Spontinis, erwarb den handsignierten Autograf. So kam die Oper am 31. August 2012 nach 212 Jahren Stille im Teatro Pergolesi di Jesi in Koproduktion mit dem Teatro San Carlo in Neapel wieder zur Aufführung. In der Überarbeitung von Federico Agostinelli erhält das Werk einen Zugang zur Gegenwart, ohne Spontinis Handschrift zu verfälschen. Humorvoll werden Episoden voller Liebeleien, Versprechungen und Maskeraden ineinander verstrickt und erlauben einen Einblick in die italienische Gesellschaft um 1800, die Spontini hier feingeistig verspottet.
Mit Ruth Rosique als Elena, Caterina Di Tonno als Olimpia, Alessandra Marianelli als Corallina, Clemente Daliotti als Nardullo, Filippo Morace als Marzucco, Alessandro Spina als Nastagio und Dionigi D’Ostuni in der Rolle des Doralbo überzeugen die brillanten Solisten sowohl stimmlich als auch schauspielerisch.
