»Joseph and his Brethren« (zu deutsch: Joseph und seine Brüder) gehört zu den überraschend zahlreichen Oratorien Händels, die heute eher stiefmütterlich behandelt werden. Dabei hat die biblische Story von Joseph, der von seinem Vater Jakob in die ägyptische Sklaverei verkauft wird und dort am Hofe des Pharaos Karriere macht, alles, was es für ein typisches Händel-Oratorium braucht: Liebe und Eifersucht, Rache, Macht und Unterwerfung, Vergebung und Versöhnung.
Das Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra aus San Francisco gehört zu den renommiertesten Originalinstrumente-Ensembles der USA. Das Orchester wurde mehrfach für den Grammy nominiert und 2004 vom ältesten amerikanischen Musikmagazin Musical America zum »Ensemble des Jahres« gekürt. Mit einer erstklassig besetzten Sängerriege, darunter Diana Moore und Nicholas Phan, präsentieren Nicholas McGegan und sein historisch-informiertes Orchester (und der dazugehörige Chor) eine lebhafte Studioaufnahme des Oratoriums, das in den letzten Jahren Publikum und Kritik bei zahlreichen Auftritten gleichermaßen begeisterte.
