Ivor Gurney war sowohl Dichter als auch Komponist und beherrschte eine Reihe von Musikgenres, darunter auch das Lied. Mit seiner intuitiven Herangehensweise an die Poesie wählte er Texte aus verschiedenen Bereichen aus, von zeitgenössischen Texten bis hin zu Balladen, elisabethanischen und jakobinischen Dichtern. Er vertonte sogar seine eigenen Texte. Zu dieser breit gefächerten Auswahl gehören seine Meisterwerke, darunter „Sleep“ und „Severn Meadows“, mit mehreren Liedern, die in ihrer ersten Aufnahme zu hören sind. Marcus Farnsworth, Gewinner des 1. Preises beim Internationalen Liedwettbewerb der Wigmore Hall 2009, wurde vom Fanfare Magazine für seine ‚hervorragend kontrollierte Baritonstimme‛ gelobt.
