Francesco Cavalli war nach Monteverdi der einflussreichste Komponist der neuen Operngattung, die Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts in Venedig entstand. Il Xerse ist ein fiktives dramma per musica, das von der Liebe des persischen Königs Xerxes zu Romilda erzählt, die ihrerseits in seinen Bruder Arsamene verliebt ist.
Die Handlung ist eine unterhaltsame und äußerst verwickelte menschliche Komödie mit gekreuzten Lieben, Hofintrigen und Verkleidungen – die Popularität des Werks führte dazu, dass es in Paris bei der Hochzeit von Ludwig XIV. und Maria Theresia von Spanien aufgeführt wurde.
Da es von Händels späterem Xerxes überschattet wurde, ist diese Martina Franca-Produktion die erste in der Neuzeit.
