Wie so viele Opern des italienischen Belcanto-Maestros Gaetano Donizetti ist seine frühe Oper Il castello di Kenilworth (Uraufführung 6. Juli 1829 im Teatro San Carlo, Neapel) heute, zumindest außerhalb seiner Heimat, weitgehend in Vergessenheit geraten. Die Handlung führt uns in die von Männern dominierte Welt der Königin Elisabeth I. und spiegelt den inneren Kampf zwischen ihrem Pflichtgefühl als Monarchin und ihren Gefühlen als Frau wider. Der Mitschnitt vom Donizetti-Festival 2018 im italienischen Bergamo vereint eine Besetzung von ausgesprochenen Donizetti-Experten, allen voran das Orchestra Donizetti Opera unter der Leitung von Riccardo Frizza. Die Aufführung erhielt hervorragende Kritiken, die den Reichtum der Kostüme und vor allem die stimmlichen und schauspielerischen Fähigkeiten der gesamten Besetzung lobten, zu der erstklassige Belcanto-Sängerinnen wie Jessica Pratt und Carmela Remigio und talentierte Nachwuchsstimmen wie Stefan Pop und Xabier Anduaga gehören.
