Die tragische biblische Geschichte um den israelitischen Feldherrn Jiftach hat wegen ihres dramatischen Potenzials sehr früh zur Vertonung gereizt. Händels letztes Oratorium Jephtha HWV 70 (The Triumph of Time and Truth HWV 71 verwendet hauptsächlich ältere Musik wieder) stellt eines seiner Gipfelwerke in diesem Genre dar.
Der Chor nimmt hier nicht nur die Rolle des Volkes ein, sondern hat auch kommentierende und reflektierende Funktion, etwa in dem ergreifenden How dark, o Lord are thy decrees am Ende des zweiten Akts.
Harry Christophers und The Sixteen machen sich seit Jahren um die Oratorien des Meisters verdient und fügen ihrer exzellenten Händel-Diskografie einen weiteren Höhepunkt hinzu.
