Die Uraufführung von »Belshazzar« fand 1745 statt – unter schwierigen Bedingungen. Der Pragmatiker Händel hatte keine Scheu, sein Werk zu überarbeiten, um es den verschiedenen Zwängen bei der Premiere und diversen Wiederaufführungen anzupassen. Dabei ging er erstaunlich skrupellos vor, akzeptierte schrecklichste Kompromisse mit Verstümmelungen oder dem Austausch ganzer Passagen und opferte damit seine künstlerische Inspiration der Ermöglichung weiteren Aufführungen. Für diese Aufnahme haben wir uns für die unserer Meinung nach erfolgreichste der verschiedenen Versionen von »Belshazzar« entschieden, die zu Händels Zeit existierten. Diese restaurierte Fassung enthält die ganze Pracht des Werkes mit dem Besten aus der Musik und einem zusammenhängenden Libretto. (William Christie)
