Giovanna d'Arco, Verdis siebte Oper, wurde am 15. Februar 1845 an der Mailänder Scala uraufgeführt. Sie entstand zwischen der Komposition von I Due Foscari (November 1844) und Alzira (August 1845), einer Zeit, in der Verdi bereits als anerkannter Nachfolger von Bellini und Donizetti populär war. Nach dem Erfolg von Nabucco, der ihn in die italienische Opernszene eingeführt hatte, festigte der venezianische Triumph von Ernani Verdis Ruf als Komponist von internationalem Format, sowohl im Inland als auch im Ausland.
Die Komposition von Giovanna d'Arco ist in Verdis Briefen nicht eindeutig dokumentiert, aber wir wissen, dass er sie in nur vier Monaten schrieb und dabei ein Libretto von Temistocle Solera verwendete, das auf Friedrich Schillers romantischer Tragödie Die Jungfrau von Orléans in fünf Akten basierte.
Giovanna d'Arco enthält eine Fülle schöner Musik, die Verdis untrügliches theatralisches Gespür und sein perfektes dramatisches Timing zeigt, beides Markenzeichen seines Stils.
Eine selten gespielte Oper von Giuseppe Verdi, gefilmt beim Opernfestival von Martina Franca, mit Jessica Pratt in der Rolle der Giovanna und Riccardo Frizza am Dirigentenpult.
