»The Mikado« startete am Savoy Theatre am 14. März 1885 zu einer unglaublichen Erfolgsgeschichte (672 Aufführungen innerhalb der nächsten zwei Jahre!). Bis heute ist diese Kurzoper weltweit immer wieder auf den Spielplänen zu finden. Mit der hier aufgezeichneten Produktion startete die D'Oyly Carte Opera Company 1957 in ihre goldene Ära.
Nur sieben Jahre nach der sehr guten ersten Produktion profitierte dieses Remake vor allem von dem bemerkenswerten Stereo-Ton. Und auch das Spiel des Orchesters ist auf höherem Level. – Auch »Trial by Jury« gehört zu den Erfolgstiteln des Gespanns Gilbert & Sullivan. Immerhin 300 Aufführungen in den ersten zwei Jahren sprechen für sich. Die Produktion von 1974 gehört zu den letzten Savoy Opern, die D'Oyly Carte für Decca aufgenommen hat.
Und wie in der Vorgängerproduktion aus dem Jahr 1963 wurden auch hier die meisten Hauptrollen mit Mitgliedern der Company besetzt; herausragend John Reed in der Rolle des Richters.
