2009 inszenierte Claus Guth am Theater an der Wien einen höchst beeindruckenden »Messias«, mit »Saul« schuf er erneut atemberaubendes Musiktheater vom Feinsten. Florian Boesch in der Titelrolle dominiert die Inszenierung als dem Wahnsinn verfallener Herrscher. Boesch ist eine Urgewalt, die auf der Bühne wie ein schwarzes Loch die Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zieht. Der britische Countertenor Jake Arditti verkörpert als David perfekt den Wandel vom unschuldigen Jungen zum Mann, der nach vielen dramatischen Ereignissen zum Nachfolger Sauls wird. »Der reine Händel-Glücksfall!« (Neue Musikzeitung). Anna Prohaska (Merab), Giulia Semenzato (Michal) und Rupert Charlesworth (Jonathan) spielen überzeugend die Rollen der Kinder Sauls, die den körperlichen und geistigen Reizen Davids erliegen. Das Freiburger Barockorchester unter Christopher Moulds hält die Balance zwischen kraftvollem Ensemble und zarten Solopassagen in Händels Partitur. Der nuancierte Gesang des Arnold Schoenberg Chors – abwechselnd jubelnd, mahnend oder trauernd – ist ebenso inspirierend wie der Klang des renommierten Ensembles mit historischen Instrumenten.
