Das Gamben-Consort wurde zur elisabethanischen und Stuart-Zeit und nach den Jahren unter Cromwell noch bis zu Purcells Zeit in England gepflegt. Obwohl es keinen Einfluss auf andere europäische Länder hatte, bildet es einen wichtigen und originellen Beitrag zur polyfonen Musik jener Zeit. Das größtenteils aus Fantasias bestehende Repertoire vermittelt ein klangliches und soziales Ideal der Eintracht und Harmonie, andererseits drückt es die Verwirrung einer Zeit der Unordnung und Angst (»distracted tymes«) aus, die von politischen, religiösen und philosophischen Umwälzungen durchzogen war. Das Ricercar Consort unter Philippe Pierlot präsentiert Stücke von Tomkins, Bull, Laws u. a.
