Der Klang eines Gambenconsort scheint schwebend leicht; seidig glänzend verbinden sich die Saitenklänge der in verschiedenen Lagen klingenden Gamben von Sopran bis Bass, fast schwerelos – free from all. Besonders beliebt war dieses Consort im England um 1600 und »a chest of viols« (eine Kiste mit einem Satz von verschiedenen Gamben) durfte in keinem Haushalt, der etwas auf sich hielt, fehlen. Die bedeutendsten englischen Komponisten schrieben herrliche Musik für diese Besetzung: Tanzsätze, Fantasien bis zu komplexen polyphonen Kompositionen und führten das Repertoire für Gambenconsort zu einem Höhepunkt. Die »chest of viols« des Ensemble Private Musicke hat Highlights der englischen Gambenmusik von Komponisten wie Holborne, Dowland, Ferrabosco II, Tye oder Coperario zusammengestellt und nimmt den Hörer mit auf eine Reise durch die Lüfte.
