Mascagnis erstes und erfolgreichstes Werk ist zu einem Opernklassiker geworden, da es Elemente der griechischen Tragödie enthält und religiöse und archaische Elemente vermischt. Es ist eine Geschichte von Liebe, Leidenschaft, Eifersucht und wiederhergestellter Ehre durch Blutvergießen. Die Regisseure Di Gangi und Giacomazzi verlegen diese traditionelle Cavalleria in ein sizilianisches Dorf der 40er Jahre, wo die Gebäude eher kahl sind und die Piazza die Bühne für private wie auch öffentliche Dramen ist.
Dirigent Valerio Galli steht an der Spitze des Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, eines der besten Italiens. Gute Kritiken für die gesamte Besetzung.
