Bereits vor dem Oratorium The Dream of Gerontius hatte sich Edward Elgar in seiner Heimat einen Namen als Schöpfer größerer Vokalwerke gemacht. Zu diesen auf dem Kontinent kaum bekannten Kompositionen zählt auch die dramatische Kantate Caractacus. Sie handelt von dem britannischen König Caractacus (gest. 51 n. Chr.), der nach seiner Niederlage gegen die Römer nach Rom gebracht wurde. Auch wenn das Libretto nicht mehr zeitgemäß erscheint, so beschenkt uns Elgar mit herausragender Musik, die es verdient hätte, bekannter zu sein. Indem er Ihre unleugbaren Qualitäten betont, macht uns Martyn Brabbins diese Delikatessen englischer Chormusik schmackhaft.
