Nach Tallis’ und Byrds erster Veröffentlichung von Cantiones Sacrae im Jahr 1575 wartete Byrd etwa 13 Jahre, bis er wieder Kompositionen in Druck gab. Seine Psalmes, Sonets, & songs of sadness and pietie von 1588 waren seine erste Solo-Veröffentlichung, für die Elizabeths Lordkanzler (und bemerkenswerter Favorit), Sir Christopher Hatton, als Schirmherr fungierte.

Dies ist die erste vollständige Darbietung der Sammlung, und sie wurde auf dem Gelände von Holdenby House aufgenommen, einst das größte elisabethanische Landhaus in ganz England.

Geschrieben auf dem Höhepunkt von Byrds Kreativität, enthält sie eine Fundgrube musikalischer Genüsse.
