Für William Shakespeare hegte Hector Berlioz nicht nur wegen seiner Liebe zur Schauspielerin Harriet Smithson besondere Verehrung. Auch nach der unglücklichen Affäre beschäftigte ihn der von ihm so bewunderte Poet intensiv.

1839 vertonte er Shakespeares Romeo-und-Julia-Stoff als dramatische Sinfonie und schuf damit eine der intensivsten Versionen zu dieser Tragödie. Aus Anlass des 400.

Todestages des Dichters fand im Januar in London ein enthusiastisch gefeiertes Konzert unter der Leitung von Sir Andrew Davis statt, dessen Besetzung auch auf dieser Aufnahme zu erleben ist. Zwei Ausschnitte aus »Les Troyens« bilden eine willkommene Ergänzung.
