Gaetano Donizetti musste bei seinem Debüt in Neapel 1823 in große Fußstapfen treten. Er kam kurz nach Rossinis Abgang an das Teatro di San Carlo, voller Talent, aber noch auf der Suche nach seiner wahren Stimme. Alfredo il Grande ist von Rossini beeinflusst, zeigt aber auch Andeutungen von großen Dingen, die noch kommen werden. Die Erzählung ist eine Feier des Heldentums und des großmütigen Königtums und führt uns ins England des 9. Jahrhunderts, wo König Alfred der Große auf der Flucht vor den Wikingern ist. Zwei Jahrhunderte nach dem spektakulären Misserfolg ihrer Uraufführung wurde diese wenig bekannte Opera seria wiederbelebt und kann heute als Reflexion über humanitäre Werte und Gesten des Widerstands gegen die Zerstörungswut des Krieges stehen.
