Im Juni 1963 entstanden diese Aufnahmen in London; genau ein Jahr später wurden sie auf zwei Decca-Alben veröffentlicht. Ziel war die Zusammenstellung exemplarischer Arien, die für den Stil des Belcanto stehen. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts hatte sich dieser aus dem eleganten italienischen Vokalstil des 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhunderts hervorgegangene Gesangsstil insbesondere dank Rossini etabliert. Treibende Kraft hinter dieser Sammlung war Richard Bonynge, der eine große Vorliebe für den Belcanto und große Repertoirekenntnis auszeichnete.
