Als berüchtigter Trunkenbold und Gotteslästerer, der beständig mit der Leitung der Chichester Kathedrale in Konflikt stand, wo er als Organist, Sänger und Chorleiter beschäftigt war, verwundert es ein wenig, dass Thomas Weelkes heute als einer der wichtigsten Komponisten englischer Chormusik des frühen 17. Jahrhunderts gilt. Nicht weniger bedeutend ist seine Instrumentalmusik, die das vorliegende Portrait des Komponisten vervollständigt.
