Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) L'Italiana in Algeri Nach der triumphalen Premiere von L'Italiana in Algeri am 22.Mai 1813 im venezianischen Taetro di San Benedetto bemerkte Rossini:»Ich glaubte, daß die Venezianer mich für verrückt halten würden, nachdem sie meine Oper gehört haben.

Nun stellt sich heraus, dass sie noch verrückter sind als ich.« Die Oper mit dem für die damalige Zeit typischen orientalischen Kolorit war Rossinis Durchbruch als Openkomponist. Die vorliegende Aufzeichnung einer Gastspielproduktion des Opernhauses Zürich bei den Schwetzinger Festspielen 1987 wurde im Rokokotheater Schwetzingen aufgenommen.

Die Inszenierung stammt von Michael Hampe, für Bühnenbild und Kostüme zeichnete Mauro Pagano verantwortlich, Ralf Weikert stand am Pult. Die deutsche Mezzosopranistin Doris Soffel, die vor allem als Wagner-Sängerin international auf sich aufmerksam machte, ist in der virtuosen Titelpartie als Isabella zu hören.
