Die Musik von Robin Milford (1903-59) bedient sich dieser typisch englischen Ader pastoraler Melancholie. Milfords Stimme liegt auf einem Kontinuum zwischen der Arbeit seiner Freunde Gerald Finzi und Ralph Vaughan Williams und ist dennoch einzigartig: lyrisch, sanft, unnachgiebig – ruhig individuell.
Die düstere Lyrik der Lieder auf dieser CD, die das unruhige Leben des Komponisten widerspiegelt, bietet einen auffälligen Kontrast zu den beschwingten, von Volksliedern inspirierten Tänzen für Soloklavier – Milford in seiner fröhlichsten Form.
