Formal bewegt sich Johnson, der für Shakespeare auch Bühnenmusik schrieb, mit Galliard, Pavane und Alamande auf althergebrachten Terrain, doch ist seinem Stil bereits eine weitreichendere Lyrik anzumerken, die im Barock vollends aufblühte.
