Als Prinz und Soldat war der 1806 auf dem Schlachtfeld gefallene Prinz Louis Ferdinand für ein ganzes Jahrhundert eine von Mythen umgebene und verklärte Persönlichkeit. Die umfangreichen Kompositionen, damals allgemein sehr beachtet, gerieten aber allmählich in Vergessenheit und wurden erst durch eine Aufführung des f-moll-Quartetts im Oktober 1906 von Richard Strauss wiederentdeckt. Man geht davon aus, dass das Werk Louis Ferdinands wesentlich mehr Kompositionen umfasste. Überliefert ist uns nur das, was auch im Druck erschienen ist.
