Zum 450. Geburtstag von John Dowland (1563-1626) präsentiert der amerikanische Lautenist Lee Santana ein Solo-Album mit Werken von und über den englischen Renaissance-Komponisten.

Neben 14 Werken von Downland, die in seinen Schriften oder denen seines Sohnes überliefert wurden, enthält diese CD auch Werke rund um den berühmten Komponisten von Zeitgenossen wie Thomas Robinson (ca. 1560-1610) aber auch Werke von Santana selbst, darunter auch Werke für Zister.

Mit dieser Zusammenstellung liefert Santana einen sehr persönlichen Beitrag zum Jubiläum des wahrscheinlich berühmtesten Komponisten für Lautenmusik.

The good, the bad and the ugly

Lee Santana teilt seine persönliche Huldigung an den Altmeister der englischen Lautenmusik in drei Kategorien ein: Sicherlich von Dowland ("good"), zweifelhaft und fraglich. Santana beruft sich in der letzten Kategorie auf ein Manuskript, das er von einem Science-Fiction-Autor, den er als Anhalter mitgenommen hatte, geschenkt bekam. Dieser wiederum habe es im Papierabfall einer Greyhoundstation gefunden. Diese Geschichte hört sich selber schon wie Fiction an, aber in jedem Fall ist das Booklet sehr lesenswert! Und auch die ungesicherte Autorenschaft mancher Stücke hindert nicht, dass sie hörenswerte, wunderbare Lauten- (und Zister-)Musik sind.
