Der Stern von Henry Purcell leuchtet so hell über dem englischen Barockhimmel, dass er mitunter den Blick auf seine komponierenden Zeitgenossen verstellt: so etwa auf John Eccles (1668–1735), der ab 1700 bis zu seinem Tod die Stelle des Master of the King's Musick, die höchste am englischen Hof zu vergebende Stelle für Musiker, inne hatte. Eccles komponierte zahlreiche Werke für das Theater. Christian Curnyn, ausgewiesener Experte für Barockopern, präsentiert als Weltersteinspielung seine Vertonung von William Congreves »The Judgment of Paris« (1700). Die einaktige Oper ist eines der frühesten Beispiele für eine durchgehend auf Englisch gesungene Oper.
