Beim Stichwort Matthäus-Passion denkt man unwillkürlich an das Meisterwerk von Johann Sebastian Bach. Bischof Hilareon Alfeyev (*1966), der mit 21 Jahren die geistliche Laufbahn einschlug und 2003 Bischof der russisch-orthodoxen Kirche in Wien und Österreich wurde, hat wie Bach eine Matthäus-Passion komponiert, an der nicht nur sein kompositorisches Können fasziniert, sondern auch die emotionelle Sättigung und geistige Durchdringung, die uns eine zutiefst orthodoxe Lesart des Leidens und Sterbens Jesu vermitteln. Gerade hinsichtlich der letzten beiden Punkte stehen sich die protestantische Passion Bachs und die orthodoxe Passion Alfeyevs erstaunlich nahe.
