Jephtha war das letzte groß dimensionierte Werk, das Händel 1751 in London schrieb. Bereits in der ersten Textzeile lässt sich durch seine Randbemerkungen in seiner handschriftlichen Partitur eine tiefere Schicksalsergebenheit herauslesen: „lt must be so“. Dieses persönliche Schicksal, nämlich die rapide Verschlechterung seines Augenlichts, zeigt sich deutlich in den Randbemerkungen mitten im Schlusschor des zweiten Akts: „How dark, O Lord, are thy decrees“ („Wie dunkel sind, o Herr, deine Ratschlüsse!“). Mit einer Notiz in deutscher Sprache vermerkt er hier: „Biss hierher gekommen den 13.Februar 1751, Mittwoch, verhindert worden wegen Relaxation des Gesichts meines linken Auges. Diesen zweiten Akt beendete er dann Ende Februar.“ Erst Mitte Juni nahm er die Arbeit am dritten Akt auf, und am 30. August hatte er sich bis zum Abschluss des ganzen Werkes durchgekämpft.
Im Jahre 1998 startete die Reihe audiophiler Konzertmitschnitte aus dem UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe Kloster Maulbronn mit der Dokumentation einer Aufführung von Händels „Jephtha“ in historischer Aufführungspraxis. Nun, 15 Jahre später, also erneut die „Jephtha“ in einem Konzertmitschnitt unter der Leitung von Jürgen Budday als Teil eines Zyklus von Oratorien und Messen, die Budday im Rahmen der Klosterkonzerte Maulbronn über mehrere Jahre hinweg aufführt.
