Fast wäre diese Oper „geplatzt“, denn das Libretto für dieses lyrische Drama, das Donizetti vertragsgemäß für die Spielzeit 1835 am San Carlo-Theater abzuliefern hatte, wurde und wurde nicht fertig (und musste ja auch noch vom Zensor gelesen und freigegeben werden...). Nach vielen Mühen und Pannen konnte doch noch für den 26.9.1835 die Premiere eines Werkes angesetzt werden, dass mit triumphalem Erfolg aufgenommen wurde und heute eines DER Standardwerke der italienischen Oper ist: Donizettis bestes Werk bez. der musikalischen Qualität, der Originalität, der Stringenz, der Expression.
