The notion was that above the Moon, in the heavenly spheres, Time had no power, whereas all beneath the Moon—the world, the four elements, Man, all creatures and plants—were subject to change and decay. Campion’s song Come, cheerful day puts it bleakly: ‘So every day we live, a day we die’.
