Dies ist die erste professionelle Aufnahme von Elgars patriotischem Liederzyklus auf Texte von Rudyard Kipling seit 1917 (aufgenommen im Mai 2009). Das Werk entstand auf dem Höhepunkt des ersten Weltkriegs und wurde sofort unglaublich populär; Elgar tourte damit durch die Theater und Musikhallen ganz Englands. Das kam erst zu einem Ende, als Kipling, der den Tod seines Sohnes Jack an der Front betrauerte, seine Dichtung nicht länger zur Glorifizierung des Krieges eingesetzt sehen wollte. Er verbat daher weitere Aufführungen, natürlich sehr zum Missfallen Elgars. Einmal noch, 1918 im London‘s Palace Theatre, war das Werk zu hören, dann verschwand es – bis heute – von den Konzertprogrammen.
