Liedkomposition war nicht unbedingt das größte Anliegen von Edward Elgar, dabei hat er zu diesem Genre sehr charmante, gefühlvolle und melodisch reiche und schöne Beiträge geliefert. Einige sind durchaus als genial zu bezeichnen. Aber sein Problem war, dass seine Methode der melodischen Erfindung nur schlecht zur kleinen Form passte. Und so feilte er stets lange an diesen teils anrührenden Miniaturen (»A Child Asleep«), die durchaus auch Wut und Verzweiflung ausdrücken können (»The River«) und eigentümliche Stimmungen beschwören (»Twilight«).
