Während Henry Purcells Liedschaffen sich heute in musikinteressierten Kreisen großer Beliebtheit erfreut, ist das des Amerikaners George Crumb (geb. 1929) weitgehend unbekannt. Das Programm der CD ist so arrangiert, dass es eine (Lebens-) Geschichte erzählt: Lieder, die sich der Liebe, der Hochzeit, Eifersucht, dem Verlassenwerden und dem Tod widmen, präsentiert Crumb in »Apparition« (1979) – als Vorlage dienen Gedichte Walt Whitmans – seine Vision von der Schönheit des Todes.
