Kurz nachdem Verdis »Aida« in Kairo herauskam, kurz bevor Wagners »Ring«-Zyklus in Bayreuth uraufgeführt wurde, hob man in St. Petersburg die vielleicht bedeutendste russische Oper aus der Taufe: »Boris Godunow« von Modest Mussorgsky! Eine Geschichte voll Gewalt, dunkler Machenschaften und Amoral: Ein Zar (Boris Godunow), der den Thron nur durch die Ermordung des rechtmäßigen Nachfolgers besteigen konnte, ein Mönch, der beschließt, gegen ihn zu kämpfen und ein Volk, das unter dem Knüppel der Polizei ächzt.
Der spanische Regisseur Calixto Bieito inszenierte den »Boris« an der Bayerischen Staatsoper erstaunlich dezent – als dunkles Volksdrama fast ganz in Schwarz- und Brauntönen; konterkarierte pompöses Zarenleben mit den täglichen Gewalttaten der Straße – durchaus mit Querverweisen zur aktuellen Politik.
Zusammen mit Dirigent Kent Nagano entschied sich Bieito in München, den »Ur-Boris« auf die Bühne zu bringen. Diese Fassung ist beinahe um die Hälfte kürzer als der wesentlich umfangreichere »Original-Boris«. Die Aufmerksamkeit wird so auf das Innenleben eines von Halluzinationen und Schuldgefühlen geplagten Zaren gelenkt. ARTE. TV
