Klappentext
"The Obituary Cocktail is a spirited look into a classic New Orleans cocktail and its procession through the history of the French Quarter of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, a time when a well-made cocktail was an entree into another realm. Made up of gin, vermouth, and absinthe, the obituary cocktail has experienced highs and lows in its storied history: absinthe was banned in the U. S. until 2007, which forced bars to make creative decisions on what to use in its place, including Herbsaint, invented in New Orleans. The cocktail was invented at Cafâe Lafitte back when it was located in Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop. This bar, the oldest continuously operating gay bar in America, attracted bon vivants, debutantes, and cocktails aficionados and welcomed famous guests like Tennessee Williams and Ella Brennan. It was an important gay-friendly bar at a time when many were still in the closet, and harassment from the police was commonplace. Other "deathly" named cocktails form another part of the story, such as Death in the Afternoon and the Zombie, with recipes contributed by New Orleans bars and restaurants, illustrating the city's fascination with death. The book also explores the New Orleans contexts that produced this deathly cocktail, delving into New Orleans' unique traditions of second lines and jazz funerals. The Obituary Cocktail isn't just a history of the drink but the story of the city that invented it"-- Provided by publisher.
