Marigold is a bright, curious, eleven year old. Her school is involved with local community issues. The latest effort is to encourage children to befriend elderly people especially during holidays, because this is their loneliest time. Marigold always found the house on the canal very mysterious-looking, but plucked upher courage to knock on the door and met Mrs Fawcett, who becomes her friend. Then the teacher had another idea. Why not have a jumble sale to raise money to rent a seaside cottage for families who aren't able to go on holidays. Marigold never expected that a dirty, old painting waiting to be discovered in an old trunk in the basement would take her on roller coaster adventures through several historic events with Mrs Fawcett and change her life.
