Not only was this Orson Welles's first film as actor and director but most of the cast were also new to the cinema. Yet so controversial was the subject matter that an $842, 000 bribe and the concentrated wrath of the Hearst newspaper empire combined in an attempt to strangle its distribution. And the authorship of the film is still a subject of conflict.
Pauline Kael's long essay, "Raising Kane", dissects a maze of Hollywood lore to re-evaluate these and many other fascinating stories about the making of this remarkable film. Her account is followed by the original screenplay, illustrated with stills and frame enlargements.

Biografie
Orson Welles (1915 - 1985) gilt heute als Theater-, Film- und Schauspielgenie. Den Anfang nahm seine einzigartige Karriere jedoch beim Hörspiel. Seine Stimme, die sich jeder Stimmung und jedem Akzent mühelos anpassen konnte, war sein Kapital. Mit seiner populären Reihe von Kriminalhörspielen unter dem Titel The Shadow wurde er bereits in den 30er Jahren zum Star. Die CBS engagierte ihn kurze Zeit später, um eine wöchentliche Reihe mit Hörspieladaptionen von Werken der Weltliteratur zu gestalten. Orson Welles, damals gerade 23 Jahre alt, hatte H. G. Wells' Science-Fiction-Roman The War of the Worlds (1898) für das Radio adaptiert. Die Inszenierung des fiktiven Stoffes war ihm dank einer authentischen Geräuschkulisse, vor allem aber wegen seiner verwandlungsfähigen Stimme, mit der er sich zum Reporter stilisierte, gelungen. Das Hörspiel wurde am 30. Oktober 1938 ausgestrahlt und schlug wie eine Bombe ein. Die in weiten Teilen als Live-Reportage getarnte Rundfunkadaption des H. G. Wells-Klassikers durch das Mercury Theatre on air unter der Leitung seines Regisseurs Orson Welles war allzu realistisch geworden. Welles kommentierte später die öffentlichen Rufe nach Rache für die unverantwortlich erfundene Medien-Invasion: Ich ging nicht ins Gefängnis ich ging nach Hollywood . Orson Welles blieb, trotz seiner Kinoklassiker, vor allem trotz des legendären Citizen Kane von 1941, für viele Amerikaner immer ein Radiomann.
