The modern, instrumentalist versions of empiricism do not provide any satisfactory information on this. What is the ultimate goal of knowledge? In his 1969 habilitation thesis, Hans Friedrich Fulda analyses the epistemological logic of late Peirce. In doing so, he sharply distinguishes his own take on Peirce from instrumentalist and transcendental-logical interpretations of Peirce, such as those advocated by Habermas and Apel. The essay is published here for the first time, supplemented by the only two essays in which Fulda returned to Peirce, and an introduction by the editor.
