Enrique Vila-Matas wurde 1948 in Barcelona geboren und ist einer der bekanntesten und erfolgreichsten Schriftsteller Spaniens und Lateinamerikas. Für sein Werk wurde er mit zahlreichen Preisen geehrt, u.a. mit dem Premio Romulo Gallegos 2001 sowie zuletzt mit dem Kritikerpreis Spaniens und dem renommierten Prix Médicis für den besten ausländischen Roman in Frankreich.
