John Dos Passos (1896 - 1970) ist neben Ernest Hemingway und Scott Fitzgerald einer der wichtigsten Autoren der amerikanischen Moderne. Nach seinem Studienabschluss in Harvard reiste Dos Passos 1916 nach Spanien, schrieb seinen ersten Roman und diente freiwillig in der Sanität der französischen Armee. Nach dem Krieg reiste er als Journalist und Schriftsteller durch Europa, den Nahen Osten und den Kaukasus. Dies inspirierte ihn u.a. zum Reisejournal Orient Express, das 1927 erschien. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs reiste er erneut als Kriegsberichterstatter nach Europa. 1947 wurde er in die Amerikanische Akademie für Kunst und Literatur gewählt. Insgesamt schrieb er mehr als vierzig Romane, daneben Essays, Gedichte und Theaterstücke.
