Der gebürtige Hamburger Nils Frahm vermischt in seiner Musik klassisch geschultes Klavierspiel mit elektronischen Klängen. 2008 gründete er in Berlin das Durton Studio, ist dort als Komponist und Produzent tätig und arbeitete bereits mit Künstlern wie Deaf Center, Peter Broderick und Dustin O’Halloran.
Das Debüt "Wintermusik" (2010) zog Fans - etwa Radiohead-Frontmann Thom Yorke - hauptsächlich durch seine Besinnlichkeit und Intimität in den Bann.
Der Nachfolger "The Bells" hingegen besticht durch eine unkonventionelle Herangehensweise - Coproduzent Broderick lag schon mal im Klavier und gab Anweisungen -, durch Exaltiertheit und Frahms Virtuosität. Das Album verblüfft außerdem durch die Tatsache, dass die Klavierstücke, so durchkomponiert sie auch scheinen mögen, ausschließlich improvisiert sind.
