"„Violator“ stellt nach Meinung der meisten Kritiker und Fans das beste Werk der Band dar. Sänger Dave Gahan sagt bis heute, dass die Leistung der Musiker unmöglich wiederholt werden könne. Das sei ja so, als hätte man Michelangelo gebeten, die Sixtinische Kapelle ein zweites Mal zu bauen....
Das Klangbild des Albums aber ist heute noch so frisch wie damals. Depeche Mode widerstanden allen Trends: House, Acid, Rave. Wer „Violator“ 1990 auflegte, genoss eine hochmoderne Platte. Wenn man sie 1994 auflegte, hörten die Songs sich immer noch zeitlos an. Wer das Album 2001 entdeckte, könnte schon nicht mehr mit Bestimmtheit sagen, wann sie erschienen war, so einzigartig klang sie. Würde „Violator“ 2017 erstmals veröffentlicht werden, könnte es die Produktion mit allen anderen des Jahres aufnehmen.
