Während die ersten sechs Alben der Prog Rock Band aus den Siebzigern in sich valide sind, so ist es sicherlich »Hoodoo Man«, das für den harten Rocksound steht, mit dem Birth Control zumindest in ihren frühen Tagen assoziiert werden.
Verborgen hinter einem kontroversen Cover ist die deutsche Band hier in Hochform. Tatsächlich spricht das pure Selbstbewusstsein aus jedem Ton des Albums; die hochwertige Produktion unterstreicht den rasiermesserscharfen Sound der Band und den manischen Power Prog, den sie spielen. Der Fokus liegt auf fetten Grooves, durchgeknallten Orgel-Soli und Riffs, die überlebensgroß daherkommen.
Ihr galoppierender Proto-Metal zeigt sich bei den großen Rhythmen von »Suicide«, bei der glorreichen Hymne »Gamma Ray« und beim Orgelgroove von »Get Down To Your Fate« in voller Blüte. Fans von Deep Purple sollten kein Problem damit haben, dieses Album gut zu finden.

Birth Control, the leading Germany progressive rock band was influenced by such British outfits as Deep Purple and Spooky Tooth. They started as a revolutionary student band in Cologne in the late Sixties, but later moved to Berlin and released their first album in 1970. Birth Control featured drummer and vocalist Bernd Noske and bass player Bernd Koschmidder. The band was completed by Reinhold Sobotta (organ) and Bruno Frenzei (guitar, vocals), who died in 1983. ‘Gamma Ray’ was one of their classic jazz-rock instrumental
pieces, that often ran on for ten minutes in ‘live’ performances.
