In der Zeit nach Beethoven galt Onslow als einer der führenden Komponisten von Kammermusik,. Vor allem seine 70 Streichquartette und -quintette begründeten seinen Ruf als außergewöhnlich befähigter, sehr detailreich und differenziert komponierender Musiker. Dem Mandelring Quartett ist sein Schaffen ein echtes Anliegen und neben der Einspielung seiner Streichquartette, von denen schon 9 auf cpo-CDs erschienen sind, hat das Ensemble zusammen mit dem Kontrabassisten. Wolfgang Güttler jetzt sein 1832 entstandenes spannungsreiches Streichquintett op. 44 eingesielt. Kombiniert wird dieses Werk mit dem Nonett op. 77 für Flöte, Oboe, Klarinette, Horn, Fagott, Violine, Viola, ,Violoncello und Kontrabass, in dem Onlsow das Grundprinzip klassischer Gleichgewichtigkeit realisiert, sprich, jedes Instrument brilliert nicht in erster Linie für sich, sondern die einzelnen Motive werden von Instrument zu Instrument geführt - interpretiert von einem der führenden Kammermusikensembles, dem Ma'aolot Quintett. In the post-Beethoven era Onslow was regarded as one of the leading composers of chamber music. Above all his seventy string quartets and quintets laid the foundation of his fame as an extraordinarily capable musician whose works are rich in detail and composed with sophistication. For the Mandelring Quartet Onslow’s music is a cause worth championing; in addition to his string quartets, nine of which have been released on cpo CDs, the ensemble has now recorded his suspenseful String Quartet op. 44 of 1832 together with the double bassist Wolfgang Güttler. It is featured here with the Nonet op. 77 for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, violin, viola, violoncello, and double bass, a work in which Onslow realizes the basic ideal of classical balance: each instrument does not shine primarily by and for itself alone, but the individual motifs are led from instrument to instrument — and interpreted here by one of the world’s leading chamber ensembles, the Ma’alot Quintet. The purest chamber-musical joy!
