Ging es Max Bruch um deutsche Größe, so war seinem 50 Jahre später geborenen Komponistenkollegen Alfredo Casella die innere Größe und Schönheit Italiens ein wichtiges künstlerisches Anliegen. 1909, also mit 26 Jahren, schrieb er eine prächtige, im opulenten Orchesterklang schwelgende Rhapsodie »Italia«: »Der Komponist wollte in diesem Werk zwei der charakteristischsten Seiten des südlichen Italien darstellen: das tragische Sizilien, die vulkanische Insel mit ihren weiten, öden Flächen, verbrannt von der sengenden Sonne, mit ihrem abergläubischen, fieberhaften Leben, und andererseits das Leben von Neapel, voll überströmender Lebensfülle und sorgloser Leichtigkeit«, so beschrieb Casella diese klingende Liebeserklärung an sein Land. 30 Jahre später folgte dann sein symphonisch ambitioniertestes Werk, die dritte Symphonie op. 63, die wir hier als Ersteinspielung vorlegen, was an sich schon unglaublich erscheint. Wie kann solch ein Werk, entstanden unter glücklichsten Umständen (ein Auftrag für Chicago) und anfangs mit weltweit allergrößtem Erfolg versehen, so vollständig in der Versenkung verschwinden? Fragen wir lieber nicht, sondern erfreuen uns an der Wiederentdeckung!

If Max Bruch was concerned with German grandeur, then the grandeur and beauty of Italy figured significantly in the art of the composer Alfredo Casella, who was fifty years younger than Bruch. In 1909, at the age of twenty-six, Casella wrote his Italia, a magnificent rhapsody lavishly rich in opulent orchestral color. Casella described this musical declaration of love to his country as follows: »In this work the composer wanted to represent two of the characteristic sides of southern Italy: the tragic Sicily, the volcanic island with its open, empty spaces, burned by the scorching sun, with its superstitious, feverish life, and the life of Naples, overflowing with vibrant zest and carefree lightness.« His most ambitious symphonic work, the Symphony No. 3 op. 63 followed thirty years later and is being heard here – incredible though it may seem – for the first time in recorded form. How could such a work, composed in the most fortunate circumstances (a commission for Chicago) and initially enjoying the greatest worldwide success, be so completely and entirely forgotten? Instead of trying to answer this question, let's celebrate its rediscovery!
